Victorian government to consider tougher punishment for train surfers

The Victorian government will consider tougher punishments for train surfers, after disturbing video of a man jumping between carriages across Melbourne emerged online.

Metro Trains CEO Andre Lezala told 9NEWS the current penalty for the offence was insufficient.

Adults caught train surfing are fined up to $379, and people aged under 18 are fined $79. 

There are reports of up to 50 train surfing incidents a week, the Rail Tram and Bus Union said.

Minister for Transport Jacinta Allan said the behaviour was unacceptable.

“This is really reckless behaviour that just shouldn’t be going on on our train network,” she said.

“They need to think about their family and friends who will be deeply traumatised should something happen to occur to them,” Ms Allan said.

The Public Transport Users Association said daytime patrols by protective service officers could be an effective preventative measure.
