Victorian fans furious about skyrocketing airfares for AFL finals

Victorian AFL fans have been left angered by soaring airline prices for Collingwood's preliminary final against the Swans in Sydney.

Supporters hoping to see Saturday night's grand final qualifier at the Sydney Cricket Ground could be left paying upwards of $1000 in flights.

One-way Melbourne-Sydney flights could be seen selling for more than $600 on Monday.

A Qantas spokesperson told that they were considering adding extra flights to Melbourne and Sydney.

The spokesperson said the cheapest fares had sold out after fans rushed to book flights over the weekend.

"Both Qantas and Jetstar are reviewing their schedules to see if we can add more capacity over the weekend," they said.

A spokesperson for Virgin Australia also told The Age that airfares booked at short notice were, generally, more costly.

"Fares booked very close to departure dates and times tend to be higher than the average fare, in line with the reduced number of available seats," the spokesperson said.

"Where possible, we always encourage our customers to book early to secure the best price and consistently offer highly competitive fares for travellers."

Tickets to both preliminary finals went on sale on Monday morning, selling out within hours.
