Manslaughter charge after death at country pub

A man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a man at a pub in regional Victoria.

Police allege two men had an altercation outside the Farmers Arms Hotel in Creswick, near Ballarat, just before 2am.

Staff performed CPR until paramedics arrived but David Blake, 39, died at the scene.

The well-known man has been described by friends as a "lovable lad" and a "gentle giant".

A 41-year-old man arrived at a local police station about 6.30am and was charged with manslaughter.

It's unclear whether the two men knew each other before last night.

Witnesses say they both appeared to be in a good mood earlier in the evening, playing pool and talking with other patrons

The man is expected to face Ballarat Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
