Victoria rattled by another early morning earthquake

Another small earthquake has rattled Victoria, less than a week after a stronger quake shook the state.

The 2.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded just after 1am in Pakenham, 53km southeast of Melbourne's CBD, at a 10th of three-kilometres.

No injuries or damage have been reported and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said there is no tsunami threat.

Shaking was felt by more than 70 people, according to Geoscience Australia.

It comes days after a magnitude 4.6 earthquake hit 127km east of Melbourne, near Rawson, at about 1:32am.

The fact Australia is not on the "Ring of Fire", a seismologically active arc along the Pacific Ocean rim, does not make it immune to quakes.

Professor Phil Cummins, a senior seismologist at Geoscience Australia told 9news.com.au last month forces exerted on the plate boundaries result in stressors.

"These get transmitted through the plate, to the plate interior, although these stressors are very small, they build up slowly," he said.

"Eventually they will exceed the frictional strength of faults in the earth's crust and those faults rupture and earthquakes happen – even though they are not near plate boundaries."

The plate boundaries lie near New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and stretch as far away as India.
