Worker heard 8 to 9 shots in Vic shooting

A man heard up to nine shots being fired after being woken by his guard dog during a fatal Victoria police operation.

Rocco Sorace's factory is next to Jaytee Electrical where the shooting is believed to have happened in the early hours of Friday morning.

"I was in bed when I heard bang bang bang," Mr Sorace told reporters at Tullamarine, adding there were about "eight or nine" shots.

"If you hear a lot of shots you stay inside."

The shooting followed a dramatic 40-minute chase through Melbourne as three suspects tried to outrun police in allegedly stolen cars and on foot before being cornered.

An officer shot and killed a man who rammed him in a stolen vehicle, pinning him to a brick wall, police say.

When Mr Sorace came out of his factory - where he was sleeping to protect scaffolding from theft - he saw a van with damage to the engine and tyres.

"There were lots of police everywhere," he said.

Mr Sorace was not immediately able return to his factory and was worried about his dog, which remained locked inside without food.
