Police are investigating why a woman was trapped under a derelict Melbourne house for four days.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was freed from under the Essendon house last night.

Firefighters cut a hole in the kitchen floor to free her shortly before 9pm.

Investigations suggest she crawled underneath and became trapped, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said.

A resident heard the woman calling out and alerted authorities, the MFB said.

"It is believed she had been there for up to four days," the MFB said.

The trapped woman reportedly told emergency service workers she was under the house for four days.

She suffered some exposure from the cold and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a non-life threatening condition.

Police said they do not know why she was under the floor, and have launched an investigation.
