A woman has appeared in court accused of murdering a man in a Melbourne public housing flat.

Fairfield woman Huong Duong, 49, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon charged with the murder of 62-year-old Ngoc-Chau Tran.

Mr Tran's body was discovered at a Richmond flat on November 8.

Police allege Duong murdered Mr Tran sometime between November 3 and November 8, court documents show.

Prosecutor Leigh Harrison said police would need extra time to gather a brief for court, with biological material and CCTV to be examined.

He also said there were more than 180 witnesses, as the alleged incident had happened in a busy, high-rise building.

The court heard Duong required methadone and another medication while in custody.

She was remanded to re-appear in the court on April 11.
