A woman and her four-month-old baby have died after falling from a Melbourne CBD apartment balcony.

The 31-year-old woman and baby, believed to be her child, died at the scene on the corner of Bourke and Spencer streets just after 10.30am on Thursday.

It's understood the woman jumped from an internal balcony within the City Point building and police are treating the deaths as a murder-suicide.

They say they're not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths and a report will be prepared for the coroner, who attended the scene after midday.

Relatives and friends visited the apartment block early on Thursday afternoon.

More than a dozen uniformed and plain-clothed police and eight police cars closed off the scene - at one of Melbourne's busiest intersections - with some taking bagged items out of the building.

Investigators began to leave shortly after 3pm, and the footpath at the front of the building was reopened as police tape was removed.

Traffic detours were in place until about 1.30pm.
