Wild weather closes Vic penguin parade

Phillip Island's world famous penguin parade attraction has been forced to erect a temporary entrance after wild weather caused structural damage to its visitor's centre.

The parade had to be closed for the first time on Sunday after safety concerns were raised over the damage.

Violent winds lashed Victoria at the weekend with gusts up to 115km/h in some parts of the state.

Penguin parade organisers have since erected a temporary entrance to bypass the visitor centre which allowed pre-booked penguin watchers into Monday's parade.

With more strong winds and rain forecast for the area this week, a Phillip Island Nature Parks spokesman told AAP on Tuesday engineers may not be able to rectify the issue straight away.

The temporary entrance will continue to be used in the interim for visitors with pre-existing bookings.

The daily parade, about 90 minutes from Melbourne, draws thousands of tourists each year as little penguins emerge from the sea at dusk and waddle along the beach to their burrows.
