Woman and child freed from lift after car smashes into pizza shop

A woman and child have been freed from a building elevator after a car crashed into a restaurant in Melbourne’s south-west this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Watton and Cherry streets, Werribee, after the vehicle smashed into the outlet about 2.10pm.

Several people were trapped inside the premises as a result of the crash, including the woman and child who were stuck in the elevator.

The trapped people have since been freed without injury, police confirmed in a statement to 9NEWS this afternoon.

The car’s driver, aged in his 20s, has been taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital for observation.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are now underway.

Motorists are advised Cherry Street remains closed between the Princes Highway and Watton Street, as emergency services work to remove the car from the store front.
