Three rings, including a family heirloom passed down for 70 years, have been swiped during a home open for inspection in Melbourne.

The owner is distraught after the rings were stolen from a home in Kelior East on Saturday, police said on Thursday.

One of the rings, a gold wedding band with a sapphire and diamond crest set, had originally belonged to the grandmother of the victim's partner.

"To open up your home and allow perspective renters to take a look, only to have items stolen, is really frustrating," said Senior Constable Ante Sandric in a statement.
