Catholic mass, public liturgies and gatherings across Victoria have been suspended until further notice amid the coronavirus outbreak.

In light of the federal government's ban on non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people on Wednesday, all Catholics in the state have been told they are "dispensed from their Sunday obligation until further notice".

"We encourage you to continue active participation in the life of the church, through activities such as time in personal and family prayer, reflecting on the scriptures, making a spiritual communion, or participating in a mass online," a letter from the Catholic Bishops of Victoria, posted on Facebook on Wednesday night, read.

Private baptisms, funerals and weddings, however, will go ahead with appropriate precautions including social distancing.

Clergy are also encouraged to make visits to people, including the sick and vulnerable.

"Let us not panic, nor be anxious, nor reduce ourselves to caring only for ourselves," the bishops said.

"This is a time to be sensible, practical, prayerful, and to share Christ's peace with those who are struggling to feel calm and safe."
