Victorians to shape Human Rights Charter

Victorians are being asked to help shape the future of their Charter of Human Rights.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula is calling for submissions from the community on the values of freedom, respect and equality that should be upheld by members of Victoria's public sector, including police and the government.

"This is about restoring human rights to their proper place in the Victorian public service," Mr Pakula said in a statement on Thursday.

The Andrews government announced a review of the Charter in March.

The original Charter, drafted in 2006, contains 20 fundamental human rights including freedom of expression, privacy, liberty, equality before the law, the right to vote and rights in criminal proceedings.

Former chief executive of the Law Institute of Victoria Michael Brett will lead the review and the final report will be handed to the government by September 1, 2015.
