Chopper patrols launched following 27 shark sightings on Victorian beaches

A helicopter will patrol Victoria's beaches after numerous sharks were spotted near popular beaches.

At least 27 sharks were sighted by the Life Saving Victoria helicopter yesterday near Anglsea and Fairhaven.

The sharks ranged between 1.5 and 3.5 metres in length.

Fisheries Victoria says the helicopter will be patrolling the area this morning to assess the situation and update information if needed.

"If you are considering going to the beach, always go to one that is patrolled, swim between the flags and follow the instructions of lifesavers or authorities," Fisheries Victoria advised in a statement.

Melbourne is set to have a few days of hot weather above 30C, with Life Saving Victoria general manager Paul Shannon also asking people to heed advice.

Mr Shannon says it's not uncommon to see sharks along the coast at this time of year.
