Victorian government opposes fuel tariff

The Victorian government opposes the federal government's interim fuel tariff.

The federal government has introduced a tariff on oil companies to bypass Senate opposition to the reintroduction of the fuel excise.

Parliament still has to endorse the decision.

Victorian Treasurer Michael O'Brien said the state government was concerned about any tax that would increase the cost of living.

"We're not supportive of these changes and we do think they should go through the normal parliamentary process," he said on Tuesday.

"We do think that parliamentary scrutiny is appropriate.

"We'd rather see tax reductions where possible rather than increases."

He said he didn't think the move would have any bearing on next month's state election.

"I think the federal government and federal budget will be seen very separately from Victoria's," he said.
