Victorian government on track to deliver weekend 24-hour public transport to Melburnians

The Victorian government has revealed details of its election promise to introduce 24-hour public transport in the Melbourne CBD on weekends.
Trains will depart Flinders Street Station every hour on all metropolitan lines, while a tram will run every 30 minutes on six of Melbourne's busiest routes:
• 19 - North Coburg to Flinders Street
• 67 - Melbourne University to Carnegie
• 75 - Docklands to Vermont South
• 86 - Bundoora RMIT to Docklands
• 96 - Brunswick to St Kilda
• 109 - Box Hill to Port Melbourne
Transport Minister Jacinta Allan announced the details of its Home Safe trial, which will begin on January 1, 2016.
"A world class city deserves a world class public transport system and that is what we are focused on," Ms Allan said.
Ms Allan said the 24-hour transport plan would be used by those working late shifts, as well as those enjoying the Melbourne nightlife.
A small number of coach services will depart Southern Cross station at 2am to Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Traralgon.
The state government will also aim to improve safety by recruiting an extra 171 Transit Security Officers, 109 Protective Services Officers (PSOs), and 62 Transit Police to support the 24-hour weekend timetable.
However, the plan comes at an additional cost - $33 million more than the $50 million originally forecast.
The state government defended the Home Safe cost blowout, and said extra transit police and PSOs would not just work on Friday and Saturday nights.
