Victorian federal seats to watch

SEATS OF INTEREST - VICTORIA

WILLS - One of the safest Labor seats in the nation, long-serving MP Kelvin Thomson is retiring as the seat faces demographic change. The Greens have made huge strides in the southern end of the electorate and losing a familiar name could make this tighter than Labor would like.

INDI - Independent Cathy McGowan unseated Liberal Sophie Mirabella in a shock result after a concerted campaign to make the regional Victoria seat marginal. Ms Mirabella has won Liberal preselection again and will try to overturn the 0.4 per cent margin, which Ms McGowan won despite a national swing to the Liberals.

CHISHOLM - Former speaker Anna Burke is retiring and her 1.6 per cent margin could include a lot of personal support. Her electorate is also experiencing some anti-Labor sentiment over a state government elevated rail plan. Labor has tapped local mayor Stefanie Perri to be its candidate.

MURRAY - Liberal Sharman Stone spent 20 years in parliament and will retire as Murray's shortest-serving member. Whoever wins this regional seat, likely to be a contest between the Liberals and the Nationals, could be set for a couple of decades in Canberra. Former AFL coach and Victorian upper house MP Damian Drum wants National preselection.

GOLDSTEIN - Well-regarded Trade Minister Andrew Robb is hanging up his Qantas Club card and retiring, after holding Goldstein with a margin of 11 per cent. Former Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson, who worked for libertarian think-tank the Institute of Public Affairs for seven years, has been chosen to replace him.
