We need $6b for infrastructure: Victoria
Victoria wants its fair share of federal infrastructure cash - and that share has a $6 billion price tag.
Premier Daniel Andrews says the Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel, the Western Distributor toll road and a significant upgrade to the Monash Freeway will all need federal funding.
The state already has $1.5 billion for the axed East West Link road tunnel, with another $1.5 billion due to come from the federal government.
"I'm not so much concerned about $1.5 billion, I'm much more concerned about us getting closer to five or six billion dollars, which is our fair share," Mr Andrews told reporters on Thursday.
"The prime minister talks a good game on Melbourne Metro. Well, let's get on and see some real decisions, not just riding trams and riding trains and tweeting out how good it is."
The $11 billion Melbourne Metro project only has $4.5 billion in funding so far, including the $1.5 billion originally meant for the East West Link.
The $5.5 billion Western Distributor would need about $1.8 billion from the federal government, with the rest to come from toll road owner Transurban.
Mr Andrews also said a potential Monash Freeway upgrade would cost much more than the $200 million flagged by federal MPs.
"I've seen the federal government talking about a few hundred million dollars, a small amount of money," he said.
"Well, no. It'll cost more than that because we're going to do this properly."
Mr Andrews said the government asked Transurban to include the Monash Freeway upgrades as part of the Western Distributor proposal.
Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the government was too close to Transurban and there were other priorities that needed attention.
"I'm very uncomfortable with what appears to be the trend of this government having its roads policy set by a private company," he told 3AW.
