Vic premier warns of GP co-payment pain

The Victorian government fears a $5 GP co-payment would lead to about 10,000 more people going to the state's hospital emergency departments every year.

Premier Daniel Andrews says modelling commissioned by his government shows how the co-payment plan would add to pressures within the hospital system.

"Making it harder for Victorians to go to the doctor means they will present to a hospital and an already full emergency department," Mr Andrews told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"We've done the modelling on this, as it is important to be evidence-based, and it shows ... Tony Abbott should rethink this. It is the wrong way to go."

Mr Andrews also pointed to new data released by the Productivity Commission, which showed Victoria's hospitals were poor performers in 2013/14.

More than 5400 Victorians waited more than a year for their elective surgery.

About one-third of all people presenting to emergency departments - almost 500,000 people - waited more than four hours for treatment, failing a national benchmark.
