Being Mrs Guy: Meet the Opposition Leader's other half

Powered by

Renae Guy has kept a low profile in the public eye for years, but come next month, this could change forever.

Sitting down at their Melbourne home for breakfast today, Mrs Guy and husband Opposition Leader Matthew revealed to 9News the story of how they met.

“We worked together, the product of an office relationship. Office romance, who said they can’t work,” Mrs Guy, a former political media advisor, said with a laugh.

At the time their boss was Opposition Leader Denis Napthine. It wasn’t until it was time for Mr Guy to stand for pre-selection that the couple decided to come clean.

“I said, ‘Renae and I are seeing each other. (Napthine) responded, “How dumb do you think I am, this has been happening for 18 months,” Mr Guy recalled.

“Everyone was on to it.”

The pair revealed their relationship was a "product of an office relationship."

Mrs Guy then moved to Canberra, causing their relationship forced to go long distance, before a job came up back in Melbourne with then-Treasurer, Peter Costello.

“She understands political life, unfortunately for the better or worse it is your whole life,” Mr Guy said.

With it comes the good and the bad, with Mrs Guy addressing the ‘Lobster with a mobster’ scandal with humour: “I’m a vegetarian, that helps”.

While life is already hectic raising three young boys, as the November state election looms the Guys are taking steps to keep stress under control.

Mrs Guy said exercise has been an outlet to deal with what has been a marathon election campaign.

The couple are now preparing for an intense month as the November 24 state election edges closer.

“I’m really proud of what Matthew’s done in the last four years, regardless of what happens I’ll be very proud of him,” she said.

But before November 24, there's another date next month Mr Guy is focused on.

“The 8th is Renae's birthday...a reservation’s been made, yeah we're going to go to the Lobster Cave.”
