Reason Party leader Fiona Patten concedes defeat in upper house

Reason Party leader Fiona Patten has conceded her spot in the upper house in parliament after the Victorian Election.

Patten was seeking to be re-elected in the Northern Metropolitan Region, but failed to gain enough votes to retain her seat, which she has held for eight years.

In a statement, the leader said the result was "disappointing" for her but said her time in parliament was an "uplifting privilege".

"(It's been) an enlightening privilege to serve the voters of this vast and diverse electorate, and to have achieved progressive change. I certainly won't die wondering," Patten said.

The Reason Party leader has advocated for several progressive policies including assisted dying legislation, the decriminalisation of sex work, harassment-free zones around abortion clinic and Melbourne's first safe injecting room.

"We have a lot to be proud of," Patten said.

"Politics and public policy have always been for me about evidence and first principles including equality of opportunity, accountability, transparency, effectiveness, and compassion."

Patten's seat is set to be taken by former Labor MP Adem Somyurek.

Somyurek was sacked from Cabinet and then quit the Victorian Labor party back in 2020 over branch stacking allegations and has since joined the Democratic Labour Party. Somyurek has always denied any wrongdoing.
