A man has been charged with murder after a Melbourne mother was allegedly stabbed to death after an apparent dispute between neighbours.

It is understood the 47-year-old man knocked on the home of a 51-year-old woman and attacked her multiple times with a knife.

The man was arrested a short time later and has since been charged with one count of murder.

He has been remanded and will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.

"It's not a family violence incident, it is a tragic set of circumstances," Victoria Police detective senior sergeant Chris Ellway said yesterday.

The alleged incident was witnessed by three young people, including the woman's children - aged 16 and 11.

The alleged attacker's son, a 17-year-old boy, was also inside the home and had wounds to his hand.

"They're being looked after at the police station at the moment, statements are being taken and their welfare is being taken care of there," Ellway said.

The man then went to a neighbouring address, where he was arrested a short time later and taken to Moorndah Hospital with a medical complaint.

"Another woman lost at the hands of a man is just horrible," Ellway said.
