Two men have spent the night being questioned by police over a shooting that's left a former detective fighting for life in a Melbourne hospital.

It comes after 53-year-old Sid Morgan was shot in the head on Spraypoint Drive at Point Cook about 11pm on Thursday and left to die at the end of the street.

Neighbours there say they heard an argument prior to a shot ringing out.
