Evacuees told 'don't go home' as bushfire warnings downgraded in Victoria

Evacuees have been warned against returning home even as the bushfire disaster in Victoria's Otways region eases slightly.

While the Carlisle River bushfire remains out of control, emergency warnings in the region have all been downgraded to "watch and act".

However, evacuees from the Barongarook, Barongarook West, Carlisle River, Charleys Creek, Gellibrand, Kawarren, Wimba, and Lovat communities have been told it's still not safe to go home.

More than 16 homes have been lost in the Otways fire, which earlier this week saw more than 1100 homes evacuated.

More than 11,000 hectares have been burnt in the blaze.

While weather conditions in the south are easing, with temperatures forecast to be near average today, that differs across the state.

In the north, temperatures remain well above average, with warnings lingering about the Walwa fire that has burned for weeks now.

Eight days of temperatures above 40 degrees have been predicted, with Victoria's hottest ever day recorded on Tuesday.

Fire danger remains high to moderate across the state, but no fire bans are in place.
