Victoria bans single-use plastic bags

Victoria has banned single-use plastic bags, becoming one of the last states to do so.

From Friday, retailers and individuals will be subject to hefty fines for providing the bags, leaving NSW as the only state yet to outlaw the environmental hazard.

In June the Victorian government passed a law to prohibit plastic bags and Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said businesses had been helped in the intervening months to prepare for the ban.

Penalties for the supply or manufacture of plastic bags stretch to $6000 for individuals and $30,000 for corporations.

The minister said the vast majority of Victorians are in favour of the move.

"This ban will slash waste, reduce litter and help protect marine life in Victoria's pristine waters," she said.

In the past, Australians have used up to 10 million plastic bags every day. Only three per cent of Australia's plastic bags are currently being recycled.

"When the ban comes into effect, carrying a reusable bag will be second nature to us, like picking up your wallet, keys and phone before leaving the house," Sustainability Victoria boss Carl Muller said.

The ban applies to plastic bags being supplied in locations including supermarkets, fashion stores, fast food outlets, pharmacies and service stations.
