Vic woman found dead after home break-in

A man is accused of breaking into a home and killing a 61-year-old woman in Melbourne's northeast.

Police were called to the house at Liberty Parade at Heidelberg West about 8pm on Tuesday, with reports of an aggravated burglary.

They believe a a 28-year-old man broke into the home and assaulted the woman, who died at the scene.

Another man, believed to be known to the victim, arrived during the attack to help and restrained her attacker until police arrived.

The accused man from Heidelberg West was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.

Police said later on Wednesday the accused remains in hospital and is expected to be in custody for some time.

Homicide detectives say they are not looking for any further offenders.
