Vic victims conned in bitcoin ATM scam

Victims have lost up to $50,000 in a bitcoin ATM scam in Melbourne, out of fears they will be arrested if they don't pay up.

Police identified four victims, all from the eastern suburbs, who've parted with the cash after being told they owe a tax debt that if not paid, will lead to their arrest.

The victims are told to take money from their bank account and pay it into an account at a bitcoin ATM in Braybrook.

Police say scammers appear to target people they can convince that their immigration status is in jeopardy and urge victims to contact police.

"Anyone getting a call along these lines should make inquiries with the relevant authority before paying any money or giving any banking or personal details over the phone," Maribyrnong Acting Detective Sergeant Katherine Lehpamer said.
