Vic upper house contenders' wait nears end

An anxious wait continues for scores of minor party candidates who might secure a spot in Victoria's upper house, pending the distribution of preferences next week.

While the final make up of the Legislative Assembly has been confirmed with a clear Labor majority, the outcome for the house-of-review remains unknown.

Labor is predicted to secure nearly half of the 40-seat chamber, with 18 spots and the opposition Liberal-National coalition is on track to get 10.

That leaves places for 10 minor and micro parties, including the Greens who might be down to just one MP - leader Samantha Ratnam - from their previous five.

Preferences are due to be calculated on Tuesday.

The 59th parliament will sit for the first time on Wednesday December 19.

Proceedings will begin with a Welcome to Country, followed by members being sworn in and 4pm question time.

Parliament will then be in recess until February.

Labor claimed 56 lower house seats in a landslide win at the November 24 election.
