An elderly truck driver has pleaded guilty to culpable driving after he crashed into a Melbourne train, killing a passenger.

Melville John Bollen, of Narre Warren North, was behind the wheel of a prime mover when it ran through lowered boom gates and clipped a Metro train in Dandenong South in November 2012.

The collision derailed the six-car commuter train, killing 43-year-old passenger David Cron and injuring 14 others.

Bollen, who was 71 at the time of the crash, on Thursday pleaded guilty to one charge of culpable driving causing death and four charges of negligently causing serious injury.

He will face a pre-sentence hearing in the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday November 21.
