Vic bureaucrats charged with $25m fraud

Two public servants who allegedly awarded $25 million in bus and rail infrastructure contracts to companies they were associated with have been charged in a Victorian anti-corruption sting.

Nine people have been charged with over 100 offences after a transport sector investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission's Operation Fitzroy.

All of those charged were involved with procurement at Public Transport Victoria and the former Department of Transport.

Two of those charged include public servants Barry John Wells and Hoe Ghee (Albert) Ooi, who allegedly awarded $25 million in transport infrastructure contracts to companies they owned or were associated with.

An IBAC report found Mr Wells and Mr Ooi's alleged corruption went undetected for at least seven years, and continued until overt action was taken by IBAC in late 2013.

The pair allegedly obtained more than $3 million in monetary profits and other benefits between them.

They also allegedly gained other valuable benefits, including goods, materials and services from "friendly" third parties who performed work for the two state government departments.

Charges include conspiracy to cheat and defraud, obtaining financial advantage by deception, misconduct in public office, giving and receiving secret commissions and furnishing false information.

Those charged have been summoned to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 6.
