Vic tram checks 'won't disrupt services'

Yarra Trams anticipates no delays as it removes C-class trams from the tracks for emergency checks following a derailment in which one lost a wheel.

The C-class tram, one of the most modern in the Melbourne tram fleet, derailed in Balwyn about 10.15am on Tuesday, crashing into a van and striking a man standing near it, causing him minor injuries.

There were no passengers on board.

Yarra Trams spokesman Simon Murphy said the remaining 35 C-class trams in the fleet would be pulled from service progressively for inspection following the accident.

They would be rotated in and out of service one by one until all were checked, he said.

He said there was no timetable to complete the checks, and he expected a "normal peak service" on Wednesday.

Mr Murphy said Yarra Trams would investigate how the accident happened.

He said it was unclear whether the wheel came loose before or after the derailment.

Rail, Tram and Bus spokesman Phil Altieri says the union has concerns about the safety of the C-class fleet.
