A man charged with murdering a toddler has lost a bid to move his regional trial to Melbourne.

John Torney is accused of murdering two-year-old Nikki Francis-Coslovich, whose body was found in the roof cavity of her Mildura home after she was reported missing last August.

His lawyer Julie Condon asked the Supreme Court of Victoria to move Torney's October trial to Melbourne from Mildura, citing publicity of the case, but Justice Lex Lasry refused the application on Monday.
