Bipartisan Vic support for refugee intake

Both sides of Victorian politics stand ready to accept Syrian refugees once the federal government decides how many to take in.

Premier Daniel Andrews called for an increase in the refugee intake in the wake of the devastation in Syria.

"I will be writing the prime minister to say we stand ready to do the right thing," Mr Andrews said on Tuesday.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said Victoria could reopen the Point Nepean quarantine station to house refugees.

"The days of making excuses of why we can't use these facilities should be over. It's had millions of dollars pumped into it over the past few years," he said.

Mr Guy wouldn't nominate a number of refugees that should be taken from Syria, but said Victoria had a long history of welcoming people.

"My mother is a refugee to this country, so I think it is absolutely incumbent upon all of us to help where we can and I think Australians are showing a great spirit," he said.
