Vic to consider new child porn laws

Criminals convicted of possessing child pornography could face up to 10 years in jail under proposed new Victorian laws.

Legislation to be introduced in the state parliament on Tuesday could also make it easier to prosecute and investigate online child pornography offences, Attorney-General Martin Pakula says.

"The new legislation sends a clear message to anyone considering committing these child pornography offences that the internet is no longer an anonymous domain for their abhorrent crimes," he said.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the laws were designed to crack down on "pure evil".

He said doubling the penalties for some offences should win support from across the parliament.

"I think they're the sorts of changes that Victorians would say 'that's the parliament working well'," Mr Andrews told reporters on Tuesday.
