A teacher has been banned from Victorian classrooms for five years after having sexualised conversations with a student, whom he also offered free driving lessons and gifts.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching on Friday confirmed Shane Osmond's registration had been cancelled and he is ineligible to reapply until 2022.

"Mr Osmond's behaviour constituted a substantial departure from the expectations of a member of the teaching profession and therefore amounted to serious misconduct," institute CEO Peter Corcoran said in a statement.

Mr Osmond resigned after being confronted by the school principal about his behaviour and subsequently the institute was notified in April 2017.

The institute found Mr Osmond "systematically attempted to engage a student in sexualised and highly personal conversations", gave the student gifts and offered free driving lessons.

"Mr Osmond's behaviour (was found) to be characterised by a pattern of growing familiarity to the point of obsession, loss of objectivity and a desire to create what he himself described as 'an indestructible friendship'," the institute's statement read.

The institute's teaching disqualification is legally binding.
