Vic swelters through hot start to autumn

Victorians can expect a hotter than usual start to autumn with warm temperatures and muggy nights predicted for the next seven days.

Melbourne is expected to reach 33C on Tuesday and even warmer temperatures are expected for northern parts of the state.

CFA state duty officer Peter Baker says despite March marking the start of autumn there's still a risk of fires across the state.

"People expect the weather conditions, in terms of fire, to back off as we drift into winter but fire weather remains with us for today, this week and most of next week," Mr Baker told AAP on Tuesday.

"The message, with this type of weather at this time of year is don't be complacent, fire can still burn."

Mr Baker said elevated temperatures had firefighters on alert, especially in the western border of the state where lightning activity is predicted for later in the day.

The Bureau of Meteorology says warmer temperatures are expected to stay around the high 20s to early 30s for the next week.

"These temperatures are warmer than average but not out of the ordinary," duty forecaster Stephen King told AAP.

"It will also struggle to drop to those typical autumn temperatures, which means we've got some warm and sticky nights ahead."
