Vic soldier's funeral after training death

An Australian soldier killed during a training exercise in the Northern Territory has been farewelled at a funeral service in Victoria.

Private Jason Challis, from Geelong, was killed during live fire exercises at the Mount Bundey Training Area, about 100km southeast of Darwin, on May 10.

He was farewelled by family, friends and fellow soldiers at a service at Tuckers Chapel in Geelong on Friday

"Our beautiful boy has gone," Private Challis' family said in a statement earlier this month. "His cheekiness and loving ways will stay with us forever."

"Everyone he met loved him ... Jason was the best son, step-son, brother and mate you could ever ask for."

The digger's platoon comrades have been praised for their efforts in trying to save his life.
