Vic skyrail consultation to take full year

The Victorian government will spend all this year consulting with residents along one of Melbourne's busiest railway lines before deciding whether raised rail lines are appropriate.

Premier Daniel Andrews has not ruled out a "skyrail" plan for parts of the Frankston line which he says would eliminate dangerous level crossings.

"Isn't it great that we are talking about how we will remove them rather than if we should remove them," Mr Andrews told reporters on Sunday.

"The consultation process will run for the whole of 2016 and we'll be listening to the community and engineers before we decide the best way to remove these dangerous level crossings."

The plan, which is expected to also be rolled out along the Cranbourne - Pakenham line, has already faced tough opposition from locals along the busy transport corridor.

Hundreds are expected to attend a protest in Edithvale against the plan on Sunday afternoon.
