Vic siege accused has hospital history

The man accused of holding a female restaurant worker hostage at knife point for eight hours has a history of being admitted to hospital against his will.

Abijath Desikan, of no fixed address, faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday where it was revealed he had been involuntarily admitted to The Alfred hospital late last year.

The 35-year-old allegedly walked into Ludlow Bar and Dining on Sunday night and took a female staff member hostage at knife point.

He then barricaded himself and the victim in a storeroom where he stayed for almost eight hours, police say.

Negotiators convinced him to let her go about 5.30am on Monday, and he was then tasered and arrested.

He has been charged with false imprisonment, armed robbery and assault with a weapon.

Magistrate Luisa Bazzani on Tuesday said Desikan has a history of involuntary hospital admissions.

Police believe he was a disgruntled former employee of Ludlow Bar and Dining.

The woman, from Port Melbourne, was not physically injured.

Desikan did not apply for bail and was remanded into custody.

He will return to court on June 30.
