Vic schools evacuated after threat

A number of Victorian schools are being evacuated after receiving threatening phone calls.

The schools are being evacuated as a precaution, police said in a brief statement on Friday.

It follows similar evacuations in interstate and overseas schools due to threatening phone calls over the past 24 hours.

The Victorian Education department says the schools reported the calls to police and enacted their emergency plans on Friday morning.

"The safety and well-being of our students is always our number one priority, and the department is taking these incidents very seriously," a spokesman said.

Fairfax Media is reporting Berwick Chase Primary in Berwick and Aitken Creek Primary School in Craigieburn are among the schools that have been evacuated.

Prime 7 Gippsland reported schools in the eastern Victorian towns of Sale, Traralgon and Lakes Entrance have also been evacuated.

Sale Primary School's Facebook page asks parents to collect their children from Sale College Macalister campus Hall.

"The school has been closed. Students and staff cannot return," it says.

Concerned parents shared the post, saying they had heard the evacuation came after bomb threats.

"Yes, it is awful. Bomb threats to schools all over," one parent posted.

Parents praised the school staff for swift action and keeping the children calm and safe.

Cowes Primary School on Phillip Island evacuated more than 500 students after a threat was phoned in about 11am.

The school's assistant principal Rodney McKenzie said a receptionist received the threatening call.

"It was a computerised message, like a robot speaking," Mr McKenzie told The Age online.

"It said there was a bomb located in the school in a backpack.

"Police have inspected the school and there's no perceived threat, but students won't be returning to school today," he said.
