A man who raped a Melbourne schoolgirl at knifepoint in broad daylight has been jailed for eight and a half years, with a minimum of six years to serve.

Christopher Bahen, 59, chased down the teen as she walked home from school last September, threatened her with a knife and raped her, telling her he'd kill her if she didn't stop screaming.

The court was told how Bahen had secretly filmed schoolgirls walking past his house in Ringwood, leading up to the attack, according to an ABC report.

CCTV footage showed that Bahen had followed and apprehended the girl at around 4pm. He then assaulted the girl on the street and in front of witnesses, who moved in to stop the attack.

The courtroom heard that Bahen’s hands were left bloody after the incident, and that police had smelled alcohol on Bahen’s breath during their interview with him.

In sentencing, Victorian County Court Judge Mark Gamble said the offence was calculated, pre-meditated, brutal and brazen.
