Victorian jail rioters may have prison guards' information

Victorian prisoners may have accessed the personal information of prison guards during violent riots at the Metropolitan Remand Centre.

The jail has been in 23-hour a day lockdown since staff were forced to retreat during violent riots over a smoking ban introduced across the state.

During the riots, on June 30 and July 1, prisoners smashed doors, walls, fences and ruined the fire alarm and heating systems at the Ravenhall prison.

They also broke into staff areas and took some records, but the government refuses to confirm those records included guards' addresses and other personal details.

Victorian Corrections Minister Wade Noonan said tensions remained high at the prison and management was treading lightly.

"There is some tension out there and Corrections Victoria will be very cautious in their approach going forward," Noonan told 3AW on Friday.
