Victoria's environment authority is cheesed off with dairy giant Bega and has fined it for making too much noise at its Melbourne factory at night.

After complaints from the public, Environment Protection Authority Victoria tested the noise near the Coburg North factory and found it exceeded the 53 decibel night limit by between two and 17dB.

The EPA said on Monday it had fined Bega Cheese Limited $7,500, warning that if it didn't rectify the problem it could face fines of up to $777,300 if prosecuted before the courts.
