Brave Victorian kids recognised

When a Victorian man was badly burned trying to light a fire with petrol, it was his young daughters who came to the rescue.

While the 38-year-old jumped in the family pool to douse the flames, Ebony, 11, called emergency services.

"My dad was trying to light a fire and it actually started a fire in the house and my dad has been badly burned," the young girl said between sobs in a triple-0 phone call.

Ebony and her nine-year-old sister Georgia were among dozens of of Victorian children honoured for their bravery by making life-saving calls to emergency services in times of need.

The Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority Junior Triple Zero Hero Awards were announced on Tuesday.

Despite admitting to being scared Ebony helped her father until paramedics arrived at their home, relaying phone messages from specialists who advised keeping the burns cool.

The awards acknowledged the efforts of 51 children including a brave girl who saved her little brother.

India, five, from Ballarat East, was named as a Junior hero for making a call to save her one-year-old sibling who had swallowed a five cent coin.

A seven-year-old Montrose boy was named as a hero after his mum had a seizure and became unconscious.

He looked after his mum and younger siblings until help arrived.

The young heroes also got a pat on the back from the state government.

"(They) remained remarkably cool, calm and collected and are shining examples of how preparing children for an emergency can save lives," Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said.
