Vic PSO stored gun items in bedroom: court

A "slack" Melbourne protective services officer who had gun cases under clothes in his bedroom will keep his job.

A delegate of the police chief commissioner decided to dismiss PSO Yong Chen after two officers in September 2013 found two gun cases next to his bed and a box of ammunition in a linen press.

Three longarm rifles were seized from his Brunswick unit.

Mr Chen, a licensed gun holder with a previously untarnished record, said he didn't have the items stored properly because he was "just slack".

He asked the Police Regulation and Services Board to review his dismissal, and was ultimately fined $2000 with a 12-month good behaviour bond instead of being sacked.

The chief commissioner took the case to the Supreme Court, asking for an order to send the matter back to the board for reconsideration, but Justice Terry Forrest on Thursday upheld the board's decision.

Mr Chen in 2013 pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to failing to store firearms and ammunition correctly, and was fined $1000.
