Vic prosecutors appeal hostage sentence

The 17-year prison sentence given to a man who held a Dutch backpacker hostage in a Melbourne hotel room for six weeks is "manifestly inadequate", prosecutors say.

Alfio Anthony Granata, 47, was sentenced to the prison term, with a 13-year non-parole period, in May after pleading guilty to charges including rape, making threats to kill and intentionally causing serious injury.

Victoria's acting Director of Public Prosecutions Gavin Silbert QC filed documents in the Court of Appeal on Thursday appealing for a higher sentence.

In a statement during his sentencing Granata's victim, who was 21 at the time, said she suffered anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder that had left her barely able to function since her 2012 ordeal.
