Vic prisoners still in lockdown after riot

Some prisoners are still in 23-hour lockdown three months after riots at Melbourne's Metropolitan Remand Centre.

Corrections Victoria says while most prisons are back to normal operation after the riots in early July, the Metropolitan Remand Centre and another high security facility still have the restrictions in place.

Repairs are to blame for the delays, a corrections representative said, but most of the works have been completed.

Opposition corrections spokesman Edward O'Donohue said the continuing lockdowns three months after the riots were proof the Labor government had bungled the introduction of smoking bans in prisons.

"Taxpayers have been left with a damage bill reported at around $20 million and all we see from (Premier) Daniel Andrews on this issue is more drift and disorder," Mr O'Donohue told AAP.
