A Victoria police officer is under investigation after being accused of rape.

The complaint was made by a colleague of the low ranking officer, who hasn't been stood down because the probe was still in the "very early" stages, Assistant Commissioner for Professional Standards Command Brett Guerin said.

It's one of a number of cases being studied by Taskforce Salus, set up to investigate sexual harassment within Victoria Police.

Mr Guerin dismissed as wrong reports a high-ranking officer's contract would not be renewed because of sexual harassment claims.

But he told Melbourne radio 3AW some high-ranking police had been investigated, including three inspectors, although those matters were resolved without criminal charges be laid.

Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said there was been a culture of sexual harassment in the Victorian force.

"Early indications are that there has been," he told 3AW on Thursday.

Taskforce Salus is due to release its report in December.
