Police say the male driver of the car is assisting them with their inquiries.

The deaths increase the number of people killed on Victoria roads over the holiday period to nine.

Among those killed is a pedestrian who became trapped under a vehicle which struck him in Melbourne on Thursday.

Victoria's road toll for 2016 stands at 291, compared with 251 deaths for the same time last year.
