Cost of living call for feedback: Vic Oppn

Victoria could have different stamp duty rates for different towns and quarterly car registration payments under a coalition government.

The opposition launched a Cost Watch website to hear from Victorians about the cost of living, inefficiency and bill shock.

"Car rego's a very good example, the concept of quarterly payments, which is how council rates are conducted, this should be something that should be considered," Mr Guy told reporters on Thursday.

"There are sensible and practical ways forward which we can consider, (so) cost of living pressures can be brought down."

Mr Guy said geographically different stamp duty rates could also help incentivise affordable housing.

"Australia has been in historical terms the lucky country, we're now becoming one of the most expensive countries," he said.

Acting Premier James Merlino said housing affordability was a priority for the government.

"We're putting proper plans in place to provide for around 600ha of land for housing development within 10km of the CBD," he told reporters.

The government is also looking at ways affordable housing can be built on government land, and changing the rules on granny flats.
